Frequently Asked Questions

Why is it important to use a specialist for my food processing and cold storage facility?

Most importantly, North American food safety laws are very strict and always being scrutinized under the watchful eye of the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) or United States Department of Agriculture (USDA). One seemingly innocent regulation violation could bring your food processing plant or cold storage facility construction project to a screeching halt – causing a costly delay in the day-to-day operations your company depends on to be successful. All of our concept, design and food plant and cold storage construction methods meet federal (CFIA/USDA) and provincial (OMAFRA) regulatory guidelines.

What if I have a concept but I'm not sure if it will work?

Leveraging our extensive background in food plant and cold storage construction, we help you create a basic floor plan along with some roughed in building sections. We will create a budget that provides you with the information you need to gauge whether or not the project is feasible from a safety and practical perspective.

Can I use my own tradespeople and suppliers?

The key to a successful outcome lies in the experience and knowledge that is brought to your project. As a rule, general trades and suppliers simply do not have the all specialized knowledge required to bring a food processing plant or cold storage facility construction project to a successful conclusion. By nature, trades people often moonlight as general contractors and designers. Can you really afford to expose your project and reputation to that kind of risk? Coldbox is happy to work with your suppliers whenever possible ensuring no one will be put in a position where he/she could compromise the integrity of the project due to lack of experience.

What is the most important benefit Coldbox brings to my project?

The fact that we know what we're doing and we do it well and on time and on budget is a given. That's the LEAST our clients expect. But here's where we really earn our keep: Most food plant and cold storage facility construction projects or retrofits and renovations involve a number of elements that need to be managed in a specialized and efficient manner – the building permits, the CFIA/OMAFRA regulatory approvals, commissioning, engineering dilemmas and on and on … This can put plenty of stress on the owner – especially if it's the first time through. Through years of experience, Coldbox has developed a system for lowering that anxiety for our clients. Time after time, our clients tell us they really appreciated the way we managed their expectations and helped them keep stress levels to a minimum.

What kind of insurance do your sub trades carry?

All sub trades hired by Coldbox must provide proof of liability insurance (minimum $5M) and possess a valid Worker Safety Inspection Board (WSIB) certificate.

I'd like to get quotes from several builders but I'm not sure how to go about it. Can Coldbox assist me?

Our Request for Proposal (RFP) Document Creation service provides you with a formal RFP document you can use to solicit multiple proposal/quotes. First, we do a thorough analysis of your needs, come up with a conceptual plan, and identify and establish your requirements. Then we create a formal RFP document and show you how to use it to achieve your objective.
